Song of the Day: Frankmusik - Our Discovery (Tribute to Daft Punk)

I’m sure there are plenty of Daft Punk tribute songs out there, especially since an entire musical genre movement was successfully spear-headed by the group - but Our Discovery by Frankmusik perfectly captures the light-hearted, techno-magic feeling you get from listening to a Daft Punk song.
The most honorable tribute song ever? Quite possibly. I’m sure Daft Punk approves.
Definitely the feel-good song of the year (is it too early to use that?), Our Discovery is a soulful, electro-pop jam that will make you wanna get up and dance your socks off. I love Frankmusik’s voice here. Our Discovery is an instance where I don’t mind the use of (the often over-used) auto-tune. It’s appropriate for this kind of song and only enhances it. His vocal sincerity is admirable and makes me love this song that much more. Pop music at it’s best.

Song of the Day: Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me

Last week’s demo left a lot to be desired, but holy fuck!ng sh!t people, the mastered version MORE than makes up for it.
With a sick up-beat bass and a breakdown that is unlike anything in music right now, Britney Spears new single “Hold It Against Me” is wholly original and stand-out phenomenal. Goosebumps anyone?
It’s as if Britney’s team and producers heard the fans long-time cry, because her voice on the song seems to be mostly unchanged and/or enhanced via auto-tune and whatnot. SUCH a relief! She sounds great and her sass comes through loud and clear on this unstoppable sex jam.
Producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke seriously brought their A-game here. I was a little nervous that with Dr. Luke being involved, Brit’s new single would sound a little more Katy Perry/Ke$ha and not enough classic Britney. Luckily, he knows he’s working with a musical icon and she has a sound all her own. First listen wise, I think “Hold It Against Me” surpasses “Womanizer” and “3” as her best leading single in years – and I hope that this means nothing but good news for the forthcoming album in March.
This song is going to explode – as if it hasn’t already. Expect another #1 Billboard Hot 100 for Ms. Spears next week as this song races up the charts at lightning speed. Now, all we have to wait for is the music video, which if it’s anything like the song itself, will SLAY.
Music in 2011 has a lot to live up to, as “Hold It Against Me” is the first major release of the New Year. No January doldrums here! Thanks Brit Brit!

Song of the Day: Katy Perry - Part of Me

Part of Me is an unreleased song originally recorded for Katy Perry’s uber-successful “Teenage Dream” album. Shelved for whatever reason, the song should be released as part of a “Teenage Dream Deluxe Edition” re-issue later this year.
I personally think that Katy Perry does best when she works her pop magic with some actual soul and feeling. Many of her songs are great radio-friendly pop gems, but hardly ever do we get to hear some insight into the Katy inside. Great ballad. Great lyrics. Great beat. Great overall song. Gimme more Part of Me and less California Gurls!!

Song of the Day: Avril Lavigne - What The Hell

Avril Lavigne is disposable - and so is her new single What The Hell, released on 1/1/11. Disposable isn’t always bad though, because I admittedly enjoy said pop music from time to time. This new song isn’t exactly a departure for Avril. It’s the same ol’ shtick we’ve heard from her time and time again, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t fun! It sounds like it stole that familiar 1960’s-sound backtrack from every Smash Mouth song ever released. (Listen to the song and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.) I can guarantee this song won’t be a big hit or be the comeback single that Avril is desperately hoping for. Avril Lavigne is on the fence of relevancy and with this new single, it doesn’t look too good for her. What The Hell is going to get old fast - even quicker than 2007’s Girlfriend. But this week, in this moment - I like it. What the hell!
